New Era and New Look for Timberwolves Basketball
HATTIESBURG/MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL—The Minnesota Timberwolves unveiled a new team logo at Target Center on Tuesday, April 11, in celebration of Fan Appreciation Night. RARE Design, a marketing firm in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, has revamped the Minnesota Timberwolves brand as the team begins a new chapter in its franchise history. The new logo was revealed during a special halftime show on Tuesday night, as the Wolves also concluded the home portion of their regular season schedule hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Timberwolves CEO Ethan Casson is eager to present the new, improved team image, and he hints that there are more team innovations to come. “This is but the first of many changes that fans will see that reflect our growing relevancy at home and abroad. These are exciting times for our state and our franchise, and this new logo embodies the hunger, drive, and passion that will define us in this new era of Timberwolves basketball.”
RARE Design CEO Rodney Richardson, who brought his branding vision to the Timberwolves, also expresses gratitude and anticipation for the growth of the Timberwolves brand. “It was a great honor to work with this franchise. We discovered and were inspired by the team’s passion and their vision for their city, not to mention the team’s great love for its fans,” Richardson explains. “The people of Minneapolis-St. Paul have a strong work ethic and an understated character of excellence. They are a people who want to do things right, to protect and preserve their vision of family and unity. All of these attributes are evident on our development of the brand.”
Richardson, along with a team of designers at RARE, envisioned and developed a Timberwolves brand that spoke to the state, the city, and the fan. “Minnesota can be a hard place to live, due to the harshness of its cold climate. It can also be one of the most beautiful places. Not only do we apply that to the natural landscape of Minnesota, but also to the city landscape,” Richardson said. “While it’s tough, it’s also beautiful. The people of this area love their city. In turn, the city loves them back. With this great love of place, there is a pack-like mentality, which aligns with the characteristics of this team’s totem: the timber wolf.”
